Spring steel wire is the main material designed to manufacture all kinds of springs and elastic components, or some structural components of the similar performance requirements.
The spring steel wire must need high elastic limit and high fatigue limit, because the springoften bear the vibration and work under the long-term changes in the shared stress. Besides, the spring steel wire also needs enough toughness and plasticity, to avoid the suddenly broken under the impact force.In the manufacturability, spring steel wire should have good hardenability and low heat, decarburization sensitivity. The spring steel wire also needs other good performances like heat or corrosion resistance when the spring needs to work under the special conditions.
The spring steel wire must have high carbon content in order to obtain the required performance. The carbon content of carbon spring steel wire is among 0.6-0.9%. Because the hardenability of carbon spring steel wire is poor, so it only used for making the spring which cross sectional dimension is on more than 10-15mm. If we want to make the spring which cross sectional dimension is relatively big, we must use the alloy spring steel wire. The carbon content of alloy spring steel wire is among 0.45-0.75%, and the elements add in is Mn, Si, W, V, Mo and so on. Their main function is to improve the mechanical properties of spring steel wire, in which Cr, W, Mo can even improve the high temperature strength of steel.
